Breast reconstruction in Switzerland - Restoring femininity after breast cancer
Breast reconstructive surgery is used to reconstruct a breast after mastectomy (complete removal) or lumpectomy (partial removal of the tumor), as part of breast cancer treatment.
It’s an integral part of many women’s care pathways, and plays an essential role in restoring body image,self-esteem and psychological well-being.
A comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach
Dr. Mehdi-Sébastien BECK works closely with a complete medical team:
- Oncology surgeon specializing in the breast,
- Radiation oncologists and medical oncologists.
This coordination makes it possible to propose a personalized reconstruction plan, in line with the oncology strategy and the patient’s wishes. Every decision is taken with care, in a humane, reassuring environment that respects each patient’s life path.
The different breast reconstruction techniques
Several reconstruction methods can be proposed, depending on the treatment undergone, the morphology, the general state of health and the patient’s preferences:
- Reconstruction by prosthesis (breast implant),
- Lipofilling (injection of autologous fat taken from the patient’s body),
- Reconstruction using a dorsalis major flap,
- Reconstruction using a rectus abdominis flap (TRAM),
- Microsurgical free abdominal flap reconstruction (DIEP).
Dr. Mehdi-Sébastien BECK will work with you and your oncology team to help you understand these options and choose the technique best suited to your situation.
Procedure
Breast reconstruction is generally performed under general anesthesia during a scheduled hospital stay. Depending on the technique used, the duration of the operation and the length of stay vary.
In some cases, reconstruction can be immediate (in the same operative time as the mastectomy), or deferred (performed after oncological treatments).
Surgical follow-up and personalized care
Recovery times vary according to the method used: from a few days to two weeks on average. Temporary swelling and bruising of the reconstructed breast may occur.
A check-up appointment is organized 1 to 2 days after the operation, followed by regular follow-up to monitor each stage of the healing process and the final result.
